Building a new PC for flight sim

Although my primary computer is a 2017 iMac Pro, I use a Windows PC for flight simulation (X-Plane/MSFS 2020/DCS World), as well as few other games like Star Citizen, World of Warcraft and World of Tanks. My PC is about ten years old now and is struggling to handle Star Citizen and MSFS 2020. I upgraded the graphics card to an NVidia GTX1060 about 18 months ago which helped, but the CPU is a 4th generation 4-core Intel i7 (4770).

Having watched a lot of PC build videos on YouTube, I have decided to build a new rig myself. My aim is to be able to run MSFS 2020 in Ultra 4K and to be able to use VR at some point. These are the parts currently on my shortlist:

MotherboardGigabyte B550 Aorus Elite ATX v2
CPURyzen 7 5800X3D 8-core
RAMG.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB Kit DDR4 3200MHz CAS 16 RAM (2 x 16GB)

Proposed PC specs for flight sim

I decided to go for a Ryzen 5800X3D after watching videos that compared it to CPUs with more cores (i.e. 5900X and 5950X). MSFS 2020 seemed to benefit from the extra onboard cache rather than the extra cores. I went with 32GB RAM in 16GB DDR4 DIMMs so that I would be easily be able to upgrade to 64GB if needed.

My build won’t start until August/September, so any suggestions from experienced PC builders would be appreciated.

Update 2022/06/22: After thinking about it, I decided to get a cheaper B550 motherboard as this will do everything I need. I now have the case, motherboard, RAM and power supply.

Update 2022/06/28: Found what I hope is a bargain price on the MSI RTX 3080 Ti Ventus 3x OC. I guess I’ll see if it was too good to be true! Also decided to switch the RGB fans to the new Lian Li infinity.

Update 2022/06/30: Decided to go for a Samsung Pro 980 2TB instead of Sabrent. Also added some extra fans. Will end up with 4 exhaust and 6 intake, which should give me some positive pressure.
